How dragon boating helps develop team skills

It’s our mission at Team Activity Group to offer the best team building experiences possible, and while we can organise a vast range of event types and formats, our signature activity is dragon boat racing.

If you’re not familiar with dragon boat racing, it’s an exciting, inclusive water sport, perfect for a corporate event. We offer several types of dragon boat activities – river trips, regattas and a long-distance challenge activity. (You can read our blog here [LINK: https://www.tag-events.com/newsandviews/1di9ozymzki5kyt89t5koairoswc1b] to find out more about each activity.)

With so many different events on offer, what makes dragon boat racing our top choice? How has it earnt its place as the ultimate team building challenge?

Paddling at the same timing and speed develops collaborative skills

Collaboration is hugely important in any workplace and there’s nothing like dragon boat racing to hone the teamworking skills which make it possible, as you work towards a common goal by listening carefully and ensuring equal effort is put in by all team members.

Camaraderie and team spirit can be built

The excitement and competition of a dragon boat activity naturally breed an environment of camaraderie which can be taken back into the workplace. An “all for one and one for all” attitude is needed to communicate effectively and complete the physical challenge of dragon boat racing, and the competitive element is fantastic for building team spirit.

An unfamiliar environment and new activity can help to grow trust between colleagues

As a water-based activity, dragon boat racing can cause some wobbles and nerves to start with. Our experienced staff will put everyone at ease, but a few butterflies can be a really good way to bond teams by giving them a chance to empathise with each other and share their experiences – after all, you’re all in the same… boat! This develops a culture of trust and feeling of community among colleagues which can be hard to establish in the office.

Different roles give everyone an opportunity to shine

Dragon boat paddling and racing makes for such an incredibly effective corporate event because there are so many opportunities to use different qualities and skills, which gives all team members the chance to make a contribution and feel valued. It’s also full of leadership opportunities, which can be helpful for managers in seeing who rises to the occasion – sometimes people can surprise you and surprise themselves!

It’s unique and memorable so the lessons learned are embedded

A webinar or day of training in the office can be forgotten as soon as the clock strikes five, but dragon boat racing is so fun and extraordinary that your teams will be talking about it for a long time to come. More crucially, the lessons they learn from the experience are sure to benefit team members personally and professionally in the long term.

We’d love to talk to you about dragon boat racing and how it can impact your team for the better. Please contact Sarah on 07767 250192 or email events@tag-events.com and we’ll talk through your options with you to create an event which matches your needs and targets.
